The Recollections

of Kitty Lumsden

(as told to Rosalie Franks)

The orphan Kitty (Catherine) Lumsden was brought up under the guardianship of James Gordon of Manar after both her parents died in 1850, and she recounted her memories decades later to her daughter Rosalie. I am grateful to Cynthia (Franks) Wilson, the descendant of Kitty Lumsden, for sending me the photographed account below. It shows the close familial relations between Gordons and Lumsdens (James Gordon had married Elizabeth Cruger Lumsden) and there are references to her, and to two of her daughters Anne Gordon and Alice Gordon (Annie and Al) as well as the transition that took place when James Gordon died and was succeeded by his son Henry. The recollections are delightful and evoke a bygone age, but also the timeless love of Kitty and her husband.
