The Gordons of Manar in Australia James Gordon James Gordon, third son of Hugh Gordon of Manar, NSW, was born at Manar on 27 June 1845 and educated at Macquarie Fields School. After studying law at the University of Adelaide, he was admitted to practice as a solicitor in July 1869. Later that year he set up in practice in Young where he spent the next 45 years. He worked in partnership with a number of other solicitors for a few years, as well as on his own, finally joining Henry Garling, and later Charles Guigni, in an enduring partnership. James was one of the first aldermen elected at Young, and Mayor for a number of years, and, as a 'free trader,' served two terms in the State Assembly between 1887 and 1889. He was for thirty years President of the Young District Hospital and, in addition, had a number of interests in property in the district. James died at Young on 22 November 1914, and was buried in the Young Cemetery. He married at Bumbaldry on 9 January 1872, Eleanor Jamieson, daughter of John Grant of Bumbaldry near Grenfell. She was born on 11 July 1849 and died at Young on 4 September 1933. They had seven children: 1. Arthur Hannibal James, born in Young on 20 October 1872. He managed properties for his father, but got into debt through drink and gambling. Lost to the family, he died at Liverpool, NSW, on 5 March 1942. A successful grazier, he was a member of a number of organisations involving sheep and wool growing, including the NSW Graziers Association and the Young Pastoral and Agricultural Society. Like his father, he was involved in many civic duties in Young and he also served as President of the Young District Hospital. Edward died at Goulburn on 22 November 1965, having married at Crafters, SA, on 2 November 1904, Lucy, daughter of Alan McFarlane of Wellington Lodge, Lake Alexandrina.
