The Gordons of Manar in Australia Frederick Pascoe Gordon Frederick Pascoe Gordon, fifth son of Hugh Gordon of Manar, NSW, was born at Manar on 11 May 1854 and educated at Macquarie Fields School. He spent a number of years working on properties in Queensland and New South Wales and ultimately became a property valuer for Goldsbrough Mort & Co. He stood for the NSW Parliament in the election of 1901 as an Independent Labor candidate for the electorate of Braidwood but was unsuccessful, getting only 5% of the vote. Frederick Pascoe retired in 1927 and died in Manly on 20 July 1932, having married at Newtown on 6 October 1875, Annie, daughter of Dr John Thomas Howell of London. She was born in England in March 1848 and died some years before her husband. They had: 1. Harold Arthur, born 27 August 1878, worked for a time with his uncle, Hugh Hannibal Gordon, at the Flemington saleyards. He joined the Pastures Protection Board, where he held various positions, and afterwards managed properties in country NSW. He died in Sydney on 3 August 1967, having married on 27 January 1908, Edith Elizabeth Mary, daughter of James Tout of Condobolin, NSW. She was born on 6 May 1879 and died on 1 May 1942. They had an only daughter: (i). Leila Annie Elsie, born at Moss Vale on 19 January 1909, died on 16 July 1985, married in Sydney on 27 February 1930, Angas Fisher Morphett Mair of Prairie Vale near Tamworth. 2. Henry Eustace was born on 20 November 1879 and educated at the Scot's College in Sydney. After farming for a while at Fitzroy Falls, he moved to Sydney where he worked as an accountant with W D & H O Wills. Ultimately he established a very successful real estate business at Neutral Bay which he passed on to his son. Henry died on 17 May 1968. He married at Burwood on 16 December 1904, Amelia Georgina Lackey, who was born on 12 December 1876, and died on 30 July 1968. They had: (i) William Lambart. (ii) Marjory Clare, born 24 December 1905, died unmarried 20 September 1983. For more information click here. 3. George Manar, born 25 May 1881, died at Young on 24 December 1881. 4. Frederick Hugh, born at Young in 1883. An engineer, he became well known in the motoring world, establishing in 1913 the firm F H Gordon & Co., which sold vehicles imported from the USA. After the 1st World War he started manufacturing the well known Australian Six, and his firm merged with Australian Motors Ltd. The company experienced a number of problems, including a price war started by importers, and production ceased in 1924. Fred, as he was known, was a very heavy drinker and he died in poor health on 11 February 1932. He married in Sydney on 13 February 1904, Alicia Cleary Cronan, who was born in 1881 and died on 5 September 1954. (i) Phyllis Clare, born 30 March 1907, died on 5 October 1980, married (1) in 1937, Simon Nicholas Churich, a marine engineer from Austria, who was killed accidentally in 1943, (2) in 1957, William John Kelleher, born in 1900, died in 1986. (ii) Eileen Hazel, born in 1910, died suddenly following a severe attack of appendicitis on 17 July 1931. 5. John, born in 1888, died young. 6. Annie Clare, born in 1885, died in 1964, married Garnet Dudley Lyle Marsden, a grazier. 7. Jean Mary Emmeline, born at Strathfield 15 August 1889, died on 16 August 1987 at the age of 98, married Thomas Henry Lishman, a captain in the Merchant Marine.
